CS2 Settings Guide: Video, Launch Options and Why Less Is Often More

Counter-Strike 2 settings are full of myths. Here's what actually helps your frame rate and visibility, and which launch options are worth keeping.

Counter-Strike players love to tweak. Every few months someone shares a list of 15 launch options that "fix" CS2, and half of them either do nothing or were useful in CS:GO years ago. Valve's move to Source 2 changed a lot under the hood, so it's worth going back to basics and only keeping what makes a real difference.

Video settings

Display

  • Display mode: Fullscreen.
  • Resolution and aspect ratio: This one is personal. Plenty of players still use stretched 4:3 because models look wider; others prefer native 16:9 for the wider view. Neither is "correct". Pick one and stick with it long enough to get used to it.
  • Refresh rate: Make sure it's set to your monitor's maximum. It's surprisingly common to find it stuck at 60 Hz.

Advanced video

  • Boost Player Contrast: Enabled. This is one of the few settings designed specifically to make players easier to see.
  • Wait for Vertical Sync: Disabled.
  • NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency: Enabled (or Enabled + Boost).
  • Multisampling Anti-Aliasing: 2x or 4x MSAA on most PCs. CS2 looks rough without it, and the cost is modest.
  • Global Shadow Quality: High is worth considering. Shadows can give away players around corners, so this is one game where cranking shadows down isn't automatically the best choice. Drop to Medium if you need frames.
  • Model/Texture Detail: Medium or High, depending on your VRAM.
  • Shader Detail: Low. It mostly affects visual extras.
  • Particle Detail: Low. Smokes and molotovs are busy enough.
  • Ambient Occlusion: Disabled.
  • High Dynamic Range: Performance.
  • FidelityFX Super Resolution: Disabled for the sharpest image. Only use it if your PC truly struggles; it makes distant heads blurrier.

Launch options: keep it short

In Steam, right-click CS2 → Properties → Launch Options. Most of what circulates online isn't needed any more. Here's what's still reasonable:

  • -fullscreen: forces fullscreen if the game keeps opening windowed.
  • +fps_max 0: removes the frame cap. Alternatively cap slightly above your refresh rate if your FPS jumps around a lot.
  • -novid: skips the intro video. Harmless, saves a few seconds.

Things like forcing thread counts or "high priority" are best left out. At best they do nothing; at worst they cause instability that's hard to trace back.

What "good FPS" means in CS2

CS2 is sensitive to frame time consistency. An average of 300 FPS with frequent dips to 120 feels worse than a steady 200. If you notice micro-stutter:

  1. Try capping FPS a bit above your monitor refresh rate.
  2. Close background apps, especially browsers with video.
  3. Update your GPU driver.
  4. Make sure the game is on an SSD.

Audio

Sound tells you more than anything else in Counter-Strike. Use headphones, turn off music during rounds (or at least lower it a lot), and experiment with the EQ profile options in the audio menu to see which makes footsteps clearest for you.

Recap

Turn on Boost Player Contrast and Reflex, use some MSAA, keep shadows at a level where you can see them, and drop the particle and shader extras. Keep launch options minimal. That's a setup that gets out of your way so you can focus on the crosshair. For another competitive shooter with its own quirks, see our Apex Legends settings guide, or head to the PentaSharp blog.
