ARMA Reforger Performance Guide: View Distance, CPU Limits and Smarter Settings
ARMA Reforger is less about GPU power and more about balance. Here's how view distance, the CPU and a few key settings shape your frame rate.

ARMA Reforger doesn't behave like a typical shooter. Bohemia Interactive's Enfusion engine is simulating a big open map, dozens of players, vehicles and a lot of AI, and much of that work lands on your CPU. That's why two people with the same graphics card can get very different results, and why lowering every graphics option to Low sometimes changes surprisingly little.
The good news: once you know where the frames go, it's easy to find a setup that's smooth and still lets you see across a valley.
Where the performance goes
Roughly speaking, two things drive your frame rate in Reforger:
- How far you're drawing the world (view distance and object distance). This hits both CPU and GPU.
- What's happening on the server: player count, vehicles and AI. This mostly hits the CPU and you can't fully control it.
So if your FPS drops in a busy town on a full server, that's normal. If it's low everywhere, even alone, look at your settings.
View distance: the most important slider
This is the setting that matters most. Long view distance is part of what makes ARMA feel like ARMA, but it's also the biggest cost.
- Infantry play: something in the 1,500–2,500 m range is usually enough. Most firefights happen far closer than that.
- Vehicles and helicopters: you'll want more, because you're covering ground quickly and spotting from further away.
- Object / detail distance: keep this lower than your terrain view distance. You can see the hills far away; you don't need every bush on them rendered.
Adjust these first and test in the same spot so you can compare fairly.
Other graphics settings
- Shadows: Medium. Very low shadows can make it harder to judge depth and spot people in tree lines.
- Grass / terrain detail: Lower settings reduce clutter and help frames, but don't go so low that you'd expect cover where there isn't any.
- Textures: Match your VRAM. Textures don't cost much FPS unless you run out of memory.
- Anti-aliasing: A mid setting keeps distant edges steady, which helps spotting.
- Post-processing, depth of field, motion blur: Low or off.
- Rendering resolution / upscaling: If your GPU is the bottleneck, a small drop in render resolution with sharpening often looks better than lowering several settings.
Pick your server with performance in mind
This sounds obvious, but it helps a lot. A server on the other side of the world adds network delay, and heavily modded or packed servers ask more of your CPU. If a particular server always runs badly for you while others are fine, it's probably not your PC.
PC basics that help Reforger in particular
- Install on an SSD. Streaming terrain from a hard drive causes hitches when you move quickly, especially in vehicles.
- Keep background apps light. Because the CPU is doing so much, a busy browser in the background has a bigger impact here than in most games.
- Use a High performance or Balanced power plan, never Power saver.
- Keep GPU drivers and Windows reasonably up to date.
Recap
Start with view and object distance, keep shadows at a sensible level, trim clutter and post-processing, and remember that busy servers will always cost frames.
